This painting is part of a series of paintings depicting the marshes of southern Savannah, Georgia. The massive oaks surrounding the marshes are quiet giants. At dusk they create a mystic atmosphere that is both soothing and peaceful reminiscent of the Hudson River School paintings of the mid-19th century.
After many photos I sketch out the composition in charcoal on a hardwood panel. Once the composition is complete I spray fix the charcoal drawing and begin to paint the image using oil paints. The fun part is once the paint has dried I cover the painting with a hard resin wax, I melt the wax over the complete image, encaustic painting.
Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, is a form of painting that involves a heated wax medium and oil pigments. The melted mix is applied to a hardwood surface. A slow technique the painting can be built up in relief. Once dry the wax gives a rich optical effect to the oil pigments used, which creates a moody haze that captures the essence of the old Southern oak trees. The painting's surface is then buffed with a soft cotton cloth creating a velvet finish. Each painting is embellished with one or two Swarovski crystals.
